Orientation & Training

The Orientation program seeks to provide volunteers with a brief introduction to the volunteer program and living in Boquete, Panama. Due to time constraints the Orientation should not be relied upon by volunteers as a complete introduction to life and living in Panama, but rather focused on logistical information.

Orientation takes place on 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The following topics will be covered:

•    UMMF Vision, Mission & Achievements  
•    Cultural Elements – The do’s & don’ts 
•    Volunteer Introductions & Ice Breaker Games 
•    Starfish Philosophy & Journaling 
•    Exploring your Passions, Creating Your Bucketlist & Goals 
•    Volunteer Expectations 
•    Code of Conduct 
•    Review of Activity & Project Calendar
•    Spanish Crash Course & Review 
•    Overview of Boquete & Town Tour - where to find what such as banks, internet, post office, international calling and cell phones, restaurants, outdoor activities and stuff to see
•    Health & Safety - Review Emergency Contact Information, Allergies, Special Accommodation Requests, Medical Facilities, Etc. 
•    Introduction to Projects & Accommodation Options
•    Budget Overview
•    Question & Answer Session 


Group Lunch Break - Introduction to Traditional Panamanian Food

After lunch volunteers who desire to sign up for Spanish Classes will have the opportunity to meet with a private Spanish teacher or visit the local Spanish School.

Please be aware that this schedule is a guide, volunteers may experience some variation in the Orientation program.

Breakfast will be provided at the volunteer lodging each day during orientation covered by the program fee. The purchasing of additional snacks and drinks is at the volunteer's expense. As most of the placement locations are within a close proximity, volunteers will have many opportunities to interact with other volunteers and locals within the community.
